Background and description
Learning between generations is still rarely planned, often because young people and older adults are assumed to have very different learning needs. JOINT starts from the opposite idea: each generation holds skills the other needs for the green and digital transition. Young people bring digital skills, while seniors hold practical knowledge of traditional sustainable practices that is easy to lose and useful again today.
JOINT, Joint Action towards the Twin Transition, is an Erasmus+ small-scale partnership in adult education run by Atlas in France, Verde in Greece and Navissos in Serbia from September 2026 to February 2028. It develops and tests a method of two-way knowledge transfer between young people aged 16 to 25 and seniors aged 55 and over, in line with the European DigComp and GreenComp frameworks, the Digital Education Action Plan and the European Green Deal.
In each country, young people and seniors first co-design two training curricula. Young mentors then train seniors in digital skills, and senior mentors train young people in traditional sustainable practices. Finally, youth-senior pairs meet for ten weekly sessions to create one digital and sustainable solution for their local community. The method and the lessons learned are collected in the JOINT Learning Handbook, free for any organisation in Europe to use.
Target groups
- Young people aged 16 to 25: students in high schools, vocational schools and universities, young professionals and members of youth organisations.
- Seniors aged 55 and over: retired people looking for meaningful activity, including those with little experience of digital tools.
- Adult education providers, community organisations working with older adults, local authorities and organisations promoting intergenerational learning.
Objectives
- Strengthen the capacity of young people across Europe to pass on their digital skills to older generations, contributing to the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027.
- Strengthen the capacity of seniors to teach traditional sustainable practices to younger generations, contributing to the European Green Deal.
- Create and test an educational method based on joint youth-senior actions that propose local solutions linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Raise awareness in local communities of the challenges and opportunities of the twin transition and bridge the gap between generations.
Expected results
- Training Curriculum for Youth Mentors, covering four digital competences: basic digital skills, digital entrepreneurship, digital communication and collaboration, and digital creativity.
- Training Curriculum for Senior Mentors, covering six groups of sustainable practices: agriculture, crafts, health and wellbeing, water management, upcycling and recycling, and travel.
- Digital and green skills pilots in France, Greece and Serbia.
- Facilitator's Guidelines for organisations that want to run youth-senior sessions.
- Five joint youth-senior actions per country and one local solution in each country.
- The JOINT Learning Handbook.
- Three local multiplier events and a hybrid final conference.
