From Fiji to the Future of the Blue Economy: Meet Joe, a Marine Biologist Protecting Coral Reefs

How can we inspire more young people to consider careers connected to our oceans? Through the NextGen Blue project, VERDE is bringing real stories from blue economy professionals closer to the next generation.
Discovering Blue Economy Careers in Fiji
Our recent visit to Fiji offered us much more than the opportunity to explore a beautiful island nation. While visiting the University of the South Pacific, we also wanted to connect with the people whose work contributes to the protection, restoration and sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
After all, what better place to explore the blue economy than a region where the ocean is so deeply connected to everyday life, local communities and sustainable development?
As part of our NextGen Blue project, we took the opportunity to meet professionals working in marine-related fields and hear their stories firsthand.
And one of these conversations was with Joe, a marine biologist whose work focuses on an essential challenge: protecting and restoring coral reefs.
Meet Joe: A Career Dedicated to Coral Reef Protection
Coral reefs are among the most valuable and diverse ecosystems on our planet. They support marine biodiversity, contribute to coastal protection and play a vital role in the livelihoods of many island and coastal communities.
But protecting these ecosystems takes knowledge, skills, dedication and, above all, people who are passionate about making a difference.
This is where professionals like Joe come in.
Joe is a marine biologist involved in leading training activities on coral reef protection and restoration in the South Sea Islands and beyond.
During our conversation, he shared his professional journey, from his studies and educational background to the work he is doing today.
We wanted to understand what it really means to work as a marine biologist, what kind of education can lead to such a career and what motivates someone to dedicate their professional life to the ocean.
His story offers a valuable perspective on how scientific knowledge can be translated into practical action to protect marine ecosystems.
Why We Are Sharing Stories Like Joe's
When young people think about their future careers, they may not immediately consider the wide range of possibilities offered by the blue economy.
Yet this growing field brings together many different professions, including marine biology, ocean conservation, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, marine technology, environmental education and coastal management.
The challenge is not only to raise awareness about these opportunities, but also to make them more visible, accessible and relatable.
That is one of the central ambitions of NextGen Blue.
Through the project, we aim to inspire young people to explore blue economy professions, discover potential career pathways and understand how their skills and interests could contribute to a more sustainable future.
We believe that meeting real professionals and hearing about their experiences can make a difference.
Learning about marine conservation in a classroom is valuable. But listening to someone who works in the field, understanding the steps they took and discovering the realities of their profession can transform a general interest into a possible career ambition.
Building Bridges Between Young People and Blue Professionals
Our meeting with Joe reminded us of the importance of connecting education with real professional experiences.
The blue economy is not just about emerging industries or environmental challenges. It is also about people, their knowledge, their journeys and their commitment to shaping a more sustainable relationship with our oceans.
By sharing stories from professionals working in different parts of the world, NextGen Blue seeks to broaden young people's understanding of what a career in the blue economy can look like.
And our conversation in Fiji is another step in that direction.
