TWIN
Background
The digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has become a critical factor in achieving the sustainability objectives outlined in the European Green Deal (EGD) and the EU’s broader vision for a competitive and resilient economy. SMEs are responsible for two-thirds of private-sector jobs in Europe and contribute over half of the EU’s GDP, making them a key driver of sustainable development and economic growth. However, SMEs continue to face significant barriers in adopting digital technologies, particularly when compared to larger enterprises.
According to Eurostat (2023), only 58% of SMEs in the EU use advanced digital tools such as cloud services, big data analytics, or AI, compared to 83% of large companies. This digital gap places SMEs at risk of lagging behind in competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability. Without appropriate support, digitalization may deepen inequalities between well-equipped businesses and those that struggle to adapt. Moreover, the green transition outlined in the EGD cannot be achieved without aligning SMEs with sustainable and digital practices.
TWIN addresses these challenges by focusing on both the threats and opportunities of digital transformation within SMEs. It recognizes that digitalization is a double-edged sword: while it offers tools to reduce costs, optimize operations, and improve sustainability, it also introduces risks such as cyber threats, poor change management, and the potential for increased environmental footprints if implemented improperly.
By offering practical solutions and training, TWIN will empower SMEs to navigate these changes, strengthen their digital maturity, and integrate sustainability principles into their business models.
Project description
TWIN aims to foster digital resilience and readiness among European SMEs by providing them with tailored training, tools, and resources to manage both the risks and benefits of digital transformation. The project will develop an innovative framework that assesses the digital maturity of SMEs while equipping them with actionable strategies to strengthen their competitiveness and sustainability.
Through a transnational partnership, TWIN will deliver a comprehensive training program that focuses on four key areas:
- Industry 4.0 Tools and Innovation – Helping SMEs harness technologies such as AI-powered chatbots, virtual assistants, and data analytics to enhance operational efficiency.
- Cybersecurity for Sustainable Development – Strengthening SMEs’ ability to protect their data and digital infrastructure through best practices in cybersecurity.
- Competitiveness and Digital Marketing – Providing SMEs with advanced techniques to tailor their marketing efforts to niche audiences, increasing their visibility and market share.
- Change Management and Customer-Centric Strategies – Equipping SMEs with tools to smoothly integrate digital solutions while maintaining customer satisfaction during transitions.
Additionally, the project will create a collaborative online platform, enabling SMEs to share insights, foster partnerships, and co-create solutions to common digitalization challenges.
TWIN directly contributes to the EU priorities of digital transformation, environmental sustainability, and SME competitiveness. By supporting the development of digital skills and promoting eco-innovation, the project aligns with the European Green Deal, the EU Digital Decade targets, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ultimately, TWIN aims to reduce the digital divide, enhance the agility of SMEs in the face of global market changes, and contribute to a greener, more digitally inclusive European economy.
