SUNRISE

Background

The energy sector is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, with fossil fuels accounting for over 80% of the world’s energy consumption. This dependency on non-renewable energy sources exacerbates environmental degradation and climate instability. Simultaneously, the renewable energy sector is rapidly growing, with projections indicating that jobs in renewable energy could reach 42 million globally by 2050, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Despite this growth, there is a significant skills gap in the workforce, with many young people lacking the necessary knowledge and competencies to enter the green job market. Traditional education systems often fail to prioritize sustainable energy and green skills within their curricula, leaving students unprepared for future employment opportunities in these critical sectors. Additionally, youth unemployment remains a significant issue, particularly in many developed and developing countries, where economic opportunities for young people are limited.

There is also a need to cultivate environmental awareness and proactive attitudes towards sustainability among young individuals. Adolescents are at a formative age where education can significantly influence their values and career choices. By integrating sustainable energy education and green skills training into high school curricula, it is possible to empower a new generation to take an active role in combating climate change and supporting sustainable development. Addressing these needs is crucial for building a resilient and sustainable future, capable of meeting both environmental goals and economic demands.

Project description

The “SUNRISE” project is an ambitious initiative aimed at the educational sector, specifically targeting high school students aged 14-19. It focuses on three main areas: promoting sustainable energy awareness, integrating green skills into the curriculum, and enhancing employability in the renewable energy sector. The project seeks to equip young individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a sustainable future, addressing the urgent need for a workforce capable of driving the transition to renewable energy.

Objectives:

  • Implement the innovative “SUNRISE” model in high schools and youth organizations.
  • Foster a generation of environmentally conscious and proactive young individuals who are well-informed about sustainable energy solutions and related career opportunities.
  • Enhance the knowledge and skills of students in sustainable energy, preparing them for the green jobs of tomorrow.
  • Increase awareness among high school students of the critical role renewable energy plays in combating climate change and promoting global sustainability.
  • Encourage the adoption of green solutions and sustainability practices within educational institutions and communities.
  • Promote STEM education among youth with a focus on renewable energy technologies and sustainability.
  • Support the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills through project-based learning and practical experiences in the field of renewable energy.
