Fighting What We Can’t See: Youth Taking Action Against Air Pollution

Air pollution is an invisible enemy. We don’t always see it, but we breathe it in every day. Across Europe, millions are affected by toxic air—an issue that claims hundreds of thousands of premature deaths annually and contributes to countless respiratory illnesses, especially in urban and industrial areas.

It’s not just an environmental issue; it’s a public health crisis, a social justice issue, and a climate threat. Yet, awareness among the general population—especially among youth—is still far too low.

This was the driving force behind a unique Erasmus+ Youth Exchange ”Under the fog” that aims to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds to explore this issue, connect with nature, and become empowered to lead change.

Understanding the Smog Crisis

Before change can happen, awareness must be built.

Participants began the program by unpacking the sources and impacts of air pollution. They examined the link between smog and fossil fuel use, urban transport, industry, agriculture, and domestic heating. In many regions, air pollution peaks in winter due to coal and wood-burning—a deadly habit hidden beneath the warmth of home fires.

The exchange helped young people connect the dots between policy decisions, everyday behaviors, and air quality outcomes, making the problem tangible and urgent.
